The most important legacy of Silent Spring, though, was a new public awareness that nature was vulnerable to human intervention. The public debate moved quickly from whether pesticides were dangerous to which ones were dangerous, and the burden of proof shifted from the opponents of unrestrained pesticide use to the manufacturers. As a result, DDT came under much closer government supervision and was eventually banned. Kennedy ordered the President's Science Advisory Committee to examine the issues the book raised, its report thoroughly vindicated both Silent Spring and its author. Many eminent scientists rose to her defense, and when President John F. Anticipating the reaction of the chemical industry, she had compiled Silent Spring as one would a lawyer's brief, with no fewer than 55 pages of notes and a list of experts who had read and approved the manuscript. Her careful preparation, however, had paid off. Some of the attacks were more personal, questioning Carson's integrity and even her sanity. "If man were to faithfully follow the teachings of Miss Carson," complained an executive of the American Cyanamid Company, "we would return to the Dark Ages, and the insects and diseases and vermin would once again inherit the earth." Monsanto published and distributed 5,000 copies of a brochure parodying Silent Spring entitled "The Desolate Year," relating the devastation and inconvenience of a world where famine, disease, and insects ran amok because chemical pesticides had been banned. The book's most haunting and famous chapter, "A Fable for Tomorrow," depicted a nameless American town where all life-from fish to birds to apple blossoms to human children-had been "silenced" by the insidious effects of DDT.įirst serialized in The New Yorker in June 1962, the book alarmed readers across America and, not surprisingly, brought a howl of indignation from the chemical industry. Carson concluded that DDT and other pesticides had irrevocably harmed animals and had contaminated the world's food supply. A single application on a crop, she wrote, killed insects for weeks and months-not only the targeted insects but countless more-and remained toxic in the environment even after it was diluted by rainwater. It meticulously described how DDT entered the food chain and accumulated in the fatty tissues of animals, including human beings, and caused cancer and genetic damage. Silent Spring took Carson four years to complete. Ninety percent of all insects are good, and if they are killed, things go out of kilter right away." Another was Carson, who wrote to Reader's Digest to propose an article about a series of tests on DDT being conducted not far from where she lived in Maryland. One was nature writer Edwin Way Teale, who warned, "A spray as indiscriminate as DDT can upset the economy of nature as much as a revolution upsets social economy. When DDT became available for civilian use in 1945, there were only a few people who expressed second thoughts about this new miracle compound. Its inventor was awarded the Nobel Prize. troops while being used as an effective delousing powder in Europe. Developed in 1939, it first distinguished itself during World War II, clearing South Pacific islands of malaria-causing insects for U.S. Unlike most pesticides, whose effectiveness is limited to destroying one or two types of insects, DDT was capable of killing hundreds of different kinds at once. Although she rarely used the term, Carson held an ecological view of nature, describing in precise yet poetic language the complex web of life that linked mollusks to seabirds to the fish swimming in the ocean's deepest and most inaccessible reaches.ĭDT, the most powerful pesticide the world had ever known, exposed nature's vulnerability. Her books Under the Sea Wind, The Sea Around Us (which stayed on the New York Times best-seller list for 86 weeks), and The Edge of the Sea were hymns to the interconnectedness of nature and all living things. "Things go out of kilter"Ĭarson was happiest writing about the strength and resilience of natural systems. The educational brochures she wrote for FWS, as well as her published books and magazine articles, were characterized by meticulous research and a poetic evocation of her subject. A native of rural Pennsylvania, she had grown up with an enthusiasm for nature matched only by her love of writing and poetry. Fish and Wildlife Service, or FWS, was uniquely equipped to create so startling and inflammatory a book. Carson, a renowned nature author and a former marine biologist with the U.S.

ZAPIZ.A), a trojan that also comes bundled with a legitimate Zoom installer. This malware variant allows its operator to execute commands remotely, such as adding or deleting files, recording keystrokes, and gathering information.Īnother example of this is the ZAPIZ malware (Trojan.Win32. In April, we discovered an attack that used real Zoom installers that came with the RevCode WebMonitor RAT (). Interestingly, both compromised installers installed a legitimate version of Zoom, likely to hide evidence of malicious activity from the user.Īside from using compromised installers, we also found instances where malicious actors bundled legitimate installers with malware files. The other sample () has an installer that consists of a file containing malicious commands. One of the malware samples () is a backdoor with remote access features, allowing the attacker to gain access to the infected machine to perform malicious actions, such as stealing information. The file size of malicious Zoom copies compared with that of the legitimate installer While it could be difficult for the average user to distinguish the legitimate Zoom app from the fake ones, closer inspection shows that the malicious versions have significantly larger file sizes.įigure 1. We encountered an example of this in May, after we found samples of malware files that were disguised as fake Zoom installers. In some cases, the attackers use fake Zoom installers to trick users into installing them on their machines. The most common Zoom-related attack technique is the use of Zoom installers bundled with malware. On the other hand, we’ve encountered Zoom-related attacks that involve actual malware, which can potentially be more damaging to organizations and individuals. While annoying, Zoombombing is typically harmless in terms of security. The most well-known malicious activity involving Zoom is probably “Zoombombing,” which involves pranksters crashing a meeting and then performing disruptive actions, such as spamming pornographic content or even just generally being a nuisance. Given its high usage rate among schools, businesses, and individuals, it’s no surprise that cybercriminals have been focusing their efforts on Zoom-based attacks. No other software has defined 2020 as much as the video conferencing app Zoom, which has exploded in popularity since the start of the pandemic. Zoom-based attacks have remained consistent While these apps have provided businesses a way of maintaining communication between employees, they have also caught the eye of malicious actors who are always looking to integrate new techniques in their malicious activities. In our 2020 midyear report, we discussed how the Covid-19 pandemic had forced many organizations to shift from physical offices to virtual ones - a change that also led to the rise of messaging and video conferencing apps as indispensable tools for communication. Welcome to the MoneyGram Remission Website My mother moved me to an elite school, / where my ears were incised by new grammar, new words.” He draws out the full implication: “I once spelled grammar as grammer, grimmer, rim.” A language is a system that can enclose as much as open, as “rim” here implies.īy collapsing the personal and the political, Wong’s speaker employs a tone that is simultaneously intimate and public, with Hong Kong and its current crisis echoing out through his relationships with family members and lovers. Then, he addresses the issue of language, and how language is never neutral, but an outcome of historical circumstance. “The year Margret Thatcher was elected,” Wong writes in the poem, “I was born,” building a direct link between self and Thatcher’s reign. The title of the poem alone suggests a focus on boundary-breaking and spillage, with it being unclear (deliberately so) if the “city” mess and “mother” mess are two different messes or part of the same. In poems such as “City Mess, Mother Mess, Fluids Mess,” Wong addresses these baroque political entanglements directly, often relating these entanglements to family history and personal history. The cross-hatching in these poems of macro-power and micro-power, of polis and eros, ideology and “lived experience,” is dizzying, and seems incredibly modern – where issues of identity and language will only grow in their multi-faceted quality as we move about the globe. Yet, Wong’s book is in many ways an exploration of this very intricacy. The situation in Hong Kong is so complex – with the territory being a creation of colonialism, but a creation whose current citizens are threatened by what could be seen as another colonial power – that it disrupts our usual political categories. The persona used by many book reviewers (at least in the US) is often one of serene moral authority, where the writer is firmly ensconced on the “right side of history,” and what that “right side” might be is imagined to be static and unchanging with the coming years and decades. The complexity of the Hong Kong situation by necessity complicates this book review. (It has become fashionable in the US to see “freedom of speech” as a right-wing issue, but as recent calls by Republican politicians to ban the teaching of critical race theory demonstrates, “free speech” is crucial for emancipatory causes.) Yet anyone who cares about the right to dissent, and the right to free speech more broadly, should be concerned about crackdowns against protestors in Hong Kong. Modern Hong Kong exists because of the British Empire, and there is an argument by some on the Left here in the States that the US should not support Hong Kong’s call for political autonomy from Beijing due to this colonial history. The reason for this is that Hong Kong itself, as a territory, as an idea, as a symbol, and as a place where more than seven million people live, is incredibly complex, and it short-circuits any appeal for ready-made answers. When I started writing this review of Nicholas Wong’s brilliant Besiege Me, a poetry collection about Hong Kong’s history and current crisis, I quickly realized that this was going to be one of the most difficult reviews I’ve ever written. I know… of all the weaknesses in the world – why wood? The ring had to be charged every 24 hours by touching it to the lantern and this is a trait which continues on to this day and has served as a nagging difficulty for all future Lanterns as the ring has a finite charge and when it’s gone it simply becomes a normal ring and the wearer is vulnerable and powerless.Īlan was also a founding member of the Justice Society of America alongside, amongst others, Jay Garrick who we know as the first Flash. The first big difference here is that this first incarnation of the Green Lantern wasn’t actually a cosmic figure, he was using magic! Alan Scott finds an old railroad lantern and, instructed by the magic flame contained within, is told how to fashion a ring out of the metal which gives him never before seen powers with one huge drawback – the ring’s power was useless against wood. If, however, you DO want to read some of these then I urge you to look into: There have been many huge storylines which cover both time and space but this isn’t the time or place to discuss those, I instead want to focus on the individual Green Lantern’s who have protected Earth rather than the wide-ranging Corps mythos itself. Johns now serves as a co-runner of the entire DCEU lending his hand to producing, writing and managing the project as a whole in a similar way to Kevin Feige over at Marvel. We don’t need to speak about the 2011 film which caused so much hate and arguably derailed Warner Bros plans for a DC Extended Universe before it even got off the ground but the comics also featured a Rebirth storyline in 2004 (different from the current DC Rebirth) which rejuvenated what was seen by some as a lost, tired character and this was down to Geoff Johns, a certified member of the comic book royal family who then worked the same magic on The Flash in 2009. My love of the Green Lantern(s) is no secret (partly because I think I mention it on every single podcast that we do) and it’s a franchise which has had a bit of a rough time over the last few years. Rhymes give them the opportunity to feel that from the first sessions they can ‘say a lot of English and say it quickly just like adults’. Young children want to communicate immediately in English and are frustrated that they can’t say what they want. The attractive, playful language – often similar to that used in television commercial jingles – and the short text make it easy and quick to memorise. Once children have worked out these sequences, they feel confident, as they know that the language content is fixed, even if the speed of reciting might alter to match a mood. It is like a compact story: it has a beginning and an end, and its own content. Some may be accompanied by physical actions, which help to confirm understanding and act as an aid to memorisation.Ī rhyme, for young children, is a complete, short experience, which fits well with their limited attention span. Rhymes need no toy, equipment or even a book to set a scene they depend on the sound of the voice reciting the language to stimulate play. Parents and children can say them at any time or in any place to change a mood or fill a bored moment with fun. The notes are available in several languages. You can also download these notes as a booklet at the foot of this page. Read the notes below about sharing rhymes with your child at home. They are usually less well known and less likely to be handed down from generation to generation like nursery rhymes. First poems may be traditional or modern they are a natural progression from early rhymes. ‘First poems’, on the other hand, generally depend less on the playfulness of the language, and more on the meaning, which evokes feelings, imagination and the discovery of ideas beyond the child’s own environment. You can find an animated version of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star on LearnEnglish Kids. Many, like ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star’ and ‘Humpty Dumpty’, are considered part of British culture. The traditional and well-known rhymes are sometimes classified as Mother Goose rhymes or nursery rhymes. Rhymes, in general, are short and depend on the melodic use of the voice to recite the text that includes rhyming words, and the repetition of sounds and words in attractive, easy-to-copy rhythms. There is a difference between rhymes and simple poems for young children. The value of this type of language-play with rhymes in early learning is both underestimated and undervalued. They find out how language works and become familiar with the relationship between the 44 sounds of English and the 26 alphabet letters – information which helps them when they begin reading to decode the sounds that make up words. They learn rhymes unconsciously and effortlessly it is not the laborious task it can be for some adults.īy playing with the short texts of rhymes, children explore the mechanics of the English language. Picking up and repeating the particular language of rhymes is another form of play for young children. Most seem to have skills and a built-in drive that enable them to imitate the sounds and pick up the language and special rhythms of rhymes. From the time young children begin to talk, many enjoy playing and experimenting with sounds by themselves – a precursor to later enjoyment of rhymes. Simple rhymes are thought to be innate in most cultures. By Opal Dunn, author and educational consultant Using rhymes |
